Hello and welcome to Up North Strings! We are a "mom and Pop" organization. Up North Strings primary focus is on our most important resource...young people. I am Ken McKay and have been a musician for 35 years and have been repairing and making musical instruments since 1985. Mary McKay performs the important, yet daunting task of keeping me honest and keeping track. We carry a full line of student instruments that I chose with the young virtuoso in mind. I think you will find Up North Strings prices among the lowest anywhere and a selection of student instruments to rival any of the much larger shops or internet sites. If you or your child is starting on Violin, Viola, Cello or Double Bass, I have very good instruments at low prices. If you are in the Traverse City area, I have a Play and Pay program that allows you to make payments to own the instrument as you play.

Since I play and make double bass instruments, I spend any free time on custom instrument construction of my own design. I also produce laminated Jazz guitars and make parts for other luthiers. And once in a while I like to make a classical guitar or two since I also play the guitar and studied classical guitar years ago.
Up North Strings also caries violins and Violas made by the Violin Society of America competition gold medal winner Ming Jiang Zhu. Ming Jiang Zhu article in .pdf. I have unbelievable prices on the VN-900 highest grade Ming Jiang Zhu violin made from all european wood. Ming Jiang Zhu special.

Of course I also do repairs and restorations. But don't bring me your Guarneri Del Gesu or Stradivarius as there are specialists for these type of instruments. ;-).
